Interested in water and the environment? Join WEF-AWWA!

As the world around us changes, the work of engineers becomes ever so important to maintain and build critical infrastructure. If you are interested or passionate at all about water and the environment, this is the place to be! WEF-AWWA, or the Water Environment Federation - American Water Works Association Joint Student Chapter at UIUC, welcomes students of all backgrounds and experience to get involved. At our biweekly Wednesday general meetings, consulting engineers and speakers present on their companies and experiences in the water industry: from advice on completing their undergraduate studies to details of the fulfilling, essential work that they do today. Other activities include attending water/wastewater conferences, visiting consulting company offices, holding outreach events in the C-U community, and connecting at social events.

WEF-AWWA houses an annual design team that creates a project solving a pressing environmental issue and has won their category at the Midwest Student Design Competition for the past two years in a row! All students are encouraged to join; we have previously had experience levels ranging from freshmen to graduate students on our winning teams. Past projects include flood mitigation in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and storm-water management at the Veterinary Medicine Facility on our own campus.

We also hold an in-person mini-conference every year, Diving Into the Water Industry. We'll have a lineup of speakers in all areas of the water industry (non-profit, consulting, municipal) and have networking opportunities afterwards. If you're interested in creating professional connections and learning more about the different types of work being done to combat water issues, definitely attend! This year's DITWI will be held on April 3rd, from 9am - 3:30pm at 2311 Newmark Laboratory.

Feel free to email wefawwa.uiuc@gmail.com or come to our general meetings if you have any questions! Our next general meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 10th at 6pm CST via Zoom, and our speaker will be from the Institute of Sustainability, Energy, and Environment at UIUC.
